Maybe it’s just me, but recent comments on the presidential race have me scratching my head. Really! This almost feels personal, that my choice is not so clear.
What am I talking about? Certain theologians are not telling me (us) how to vote, but rather explaining why my (our) vote could be wrong. It’s almost like, ‘I know you’re sincere, but you’re sincerely wrong.’
I take it to mean that neither choice (candidate) is worthy of support. I wonder who the theologians with all the answers will pick. Or is that left to the less sincere?
One is flawed with the obvious. Advocating abortion, condoning all manner of sexual perversion, and corruption.
The other has a different set of flaws that are equally disqualifying. Things like boastfulness, vulgarity, and factiousness.
Because of these destructive set of values, neither is worthy of the high office of President.
You can see why I’m scratching my head.
No serious Christian, those willing stand at a burning stake rather than to deny Christ, will agree that pro-abortion candidates are no more flawed than one that is boastful, vulgar, or factiousness (look up factiousness, It may actually be an asset in 2020 America).
The worthiness argument seems to focus on being a good witness for Christ. As I understand the thinking, a Christian supporting either is a poor witness to unbelievers. Christians supporting either candidate are no different than unbelievers as to values and lifestyle. Coming to Christ will change nothing.
The ‘poor witness’ theory means we’re sending countless unsaved people to eternal damnation. Their souls are lost forever because Christians like me were willing to support a person that leads a less than perfect life.
To be fair, the term unrepentant is used. The flaws of the candidates are unrepentant sin.
At the risk of sounding less than gentle, perhaps factious, I need to share my thoughts.
God raises up kings and presidents. He chooses who He desires. Biblical history has shown us that God does not always choose the one we would.
At times, the people whom God chooses are flawed. Maybe that’s the point. It’s not who or what we see, but who and what God sees.
David was a man after God’s heart. We all know that he was less than perfect. He had flaws. When he sinned, he confessed to God, and God did what God does. He forgave him.
How about Abraham? He didn’t wait on God’s promise, and Ishmael was the result.
Jonah did not obey, but God fixed it with a whale.
The point is, God uses flawed people. And yes, repentance is a part of God’s forgiveness.
So who among us knows the heart of the candidates? Who has repented for their past?
I’ll go first. When it comes to approving of abortion and sexual sin, one candidate continues to support both. There are other flaws but we’ll consider them another time.
The cited flaws of the second, the ones that destroy our witness if we agree with him, are things like unrepentant boastfulness.
I can’t judge a heart. Only God can. So how can I know if it’s unrepentant? Do any among us know if another has ‘child-like’ repentance?
Well, he continues to be boastful and vulgar! Really? Is that the real sin of Scripture, or is he simply talking like a man from Queens?
I noted a reference in an article supporting the ‘poor witness’ theory: Jeremiah 48:29-31 – I looked it up.
29 We have heard of the pride of Moab—he is very proud—of his loftiness, his pride, and his arrogance, and the haughtiness of his heart. 30 I know his insolence, declares the Lord; his boasts are false, his deeds are false. 31 Therefore I wail for Moab; I cry out for all Moab; for the men of Kir-hareseth I mourn.
I am not ashamed but proud to support the President. I believe that he is the best choice for a healthy America. If you disagree, then the Scripture above may apply.
My belief is the President is not prideful or arrogant, but confident. He has undeniable success in business. His boasts are not false. His deeds are not false. The traits of Jeremiah 48 are not properly applied.
That’s my view, I didn’t go to seminary, but I can read. The term ‘haughtiness of heart’ is pivotal. It is widely reported that anyone who knows the President, Those who have spent time with him, know he is the exact opposite of haughtiness.
The President left a billionaire lifestyle because of the corruption in government. He left a life that most can not even think of, to stop the endless wars that benefit a corrupt governing class.
It is common knowledge that Washington DC is for sale. Foreign governments spend unknown millions of dollars each year to buy the favor of politicians. ‘The Swamp’.
Big business and high tech do the same. Offering no-show jobs to friends and family of government to garner support and favor. ‘The Swamp’.
I recently read Jonathan Cahn’s books, The Harbinger, and The Oracle. If I am going to cast my lot to a theologian, then I’ll choose Jonathan Cahn.
America is on the verge of losing the blessings of God. When God lifts His hand of protection, the barbarians will storm the gate, and our nation, our freedoms, and our liberty will be lost.
We have seen in the COVID response what absolute power will do. Churches have been closed for seven months. Freedom of religion, to worship as we choose, has been cast aside. All because a few have the power to do so.
A billionaire goes to Washington to fix things. Politicians go to Washington and become millionaires.
I have already voted. I voted for President Trump. I only wish I could do it again.
If you’re still on the fence, then take a day and read Phil Robertson’s book, Jesus Politics. It’s a clear choice.
